GROUP FURNITURE (2019) 45 MINUTES
Group Furniture– a reimagining of Furniture (Gertrude Contemporary, 2018) – takes French avant-garde composer Erik Satie’s ‘furniture music’ (or background music) as a departure point to question endurance, spectatorship and value.
Group Furniture is obsessed with repeats- historical, sonic, visual, and physical. Using two works by Erik Satie,('furniture music' & 'Vexations' mixed with an episode of 'I've Got A Secret' from 1960s American TV, it questions through repetition, attention and how things change or stay the same. It desires to meet someone like Karl Schenzer- an audience member who was present for the full 18 hours concert of ‘Vexations’ when it was first presented in NYC in 1963.
